ElectroCity??

So this entry is going to be my take on the newest hipster trend to catch on in Memphis... come on you must have heard about ElectroCity!

This is half rave dance party, half indie hipster cool contest, but either way a hell of a lot of fun!

The brain child of some local dj's and musicians this new phenomenon is a recent addition to the Memphis nightlife. It is hosted once a month, previously in old warehouse's it has finally moved to Nocturnal on Madison Avenue for its new home (across the street from a local Irish favorite Murphy's). It has grown and grown since since it first began over a year ago, now showcasing the biggest gathering of Midtown hipster's since Bright Eyes last played town (haha). So I say all this as a precursor to the fact I was adamant not to attend, it felt a little too kitsch for me (and that is saying something), and my preexisting research on the effects of alcohol on large numbers of young hipsters had lead me to steer clear from such functions. Yet I kept hearing about how kickass a time it was sure to be, so finally I gave in, I put on my double banded purple headband and skinny jeans and went to DANCE.

Not so fast skippy, I first had to wait in a line, (an event I am very much unaccustomed to having to endure), for close to 2 hours! In this course of time not only did I smoke half a pack of cigarettes, but I got to do some very involved people watching. I saw a guy with what appeared to be a teddy bear attached to his head in hat form, girls wearing next to nothing despite the rain and 40 degree weather, and way too many glow sticks. I also got to watch a group of what appeared to be 16 year old girls try to skip me in line and their faces when I began calling them stupid little bitches to the security guard. Remember my previous comment about booze and hipster's? Well yeah it proved my point, "southern hospitality" seems to be dissolved when girls inhale that much hair spray on a daily basis, seriously how big does your bouffant need to be when your about to dance in a nearly pitch black space next to dudes sweaty backs? Sheesh.

Ok, I'm off point. So my group finally makes it in around midnight, and yes the pain of waiting and close call cat fight was all worth it. I danced and drank my PBR's untill it shut down at 3 a.m., listening to the dj's spin everything from Kanye to Rage with never a dull moment in between. I ran into several friend's and acquaintances, and several people I'd have rather not seen, I got glow in the dark bubbles sprayed across my arms and back, and left that night sweat soaked and happy. So the moral of this story is, just fucking give in already. Go shake your ass and get drunk, who cares if every annoying hispter stereotype is there, hell that just gives me more to make fun of! ElectroCity was something Memphis has been needing for some time now, we are always the last to grab onto the bandwagon (sometimes a good thing), and well an electro dance scene was just what all us kids needed to expend that pent up winter energy we get from day after day trapped in the same old bars. I am not going to be able to make this Friday's opening of ElectroCity's sister party Credick or Debit, but I will be at ElectroCity next month. Hey if anyone reads this, well hell maybe you can come and buy me a beer!

Ciao til next time, and support our city, buy at locally owned businesses!
